Marva
What do you make?
I absolutely adore Ankara or African print fabric, and I use it for an eclectic mix of items. For example, fashion, stationary, soft furnishing. During the pandemic I have been making masks commercially as well as donating them to my local hospital.
What inspires you?
My inspiration comes from the fabric designs. As I’m selecting the fabric, my excitement builds as I contemplate the process from fabric to end product, such as lampshades and clothing.
How did you begin your making journey?
Initially I started jewellery making for friends and family. It has developed into a little cottage industry and I have a small room full of fabrics and beads.
What is your favourite thing that you make?
Lampshades, because I find it therapeutic. It also gives me the opportunity to use both my dressmaking and jewellery skills. For example, cutting the pattern and then accessorising with beads and trimmings.
Do you ever have crafting disasters?
Once I took the measurements given to me by a client and ended up with everything curtains never again will I use measurements that I have not taken myself! #LaughLaughLaugh
If you had a crafting wish, what would it be?
I would love to go to Kenya to meet the Maasai tribe and learn how they use beads for making jewellery! decorate glass items with special pens and gemstones.
